Vermont Folk Artist Gloria Hurd Lowell taught herself to sew when she was eleven and has grown creatively every year since then! In her 20’s, she added to her mastery of textile crafts by taking painting and art classes and 10 years ago she began her study of Scandinavian flat plane carving, developing her own technique of carving on clay. It is Gloria’s unique ability to combine and personalize her painting, sewing and carving skills which characterizes her style of folk art.

The enchanting products offered by Lowell Country Gifts are on display in a fascinating historical site. Gloria and her husband
painstakingly restored a more than 100 year old horse barn on their property in Benson, Vermont. In the 1920’s horses were stabled where Gloria now creates and displays Lowell Country Gifts. The meticulous attention to detail you find in Gloria’s art is also obvious in the restoration of this building. For example, you can still see the old oxidized wood on the interior walls. And the charming picket fence was built by the son of the previous owners (relatives of Gloria’s husband). Gloria and her husband dismantled the fence and brought it home to honor their late relative.
